‘Wij passen onze duurzaamheidsstandaarden wereldwijd toe’

Koninklijke Philips wil een voortrekkersrol vervullen in duurzame ontwikkeling en het behalen van de klimaatdoelen van Parijs. Het Nederlandse health-tech concern houdt er daarom over de hele wereld dezelfde hoge standaarden op na.
Dit zegt Philips-CEO Frans van Houten tijdens een videogesprek met Hanneke Veringa, countrymanager van AXA Investment Managers. In het kader van een online serie voor relaties, interviewt Veringa CEO’s over hun duurzaamheidsagenda.
Op het vlak van milieu, de E in ESG, zet Philips in op producten die duurzamer zijn dan die van concurrenten, aldus Van Houten. ‘En we hebben onze doelen bijgesteld naar een scenario van 1,5 graden Celcius opwarming, van eerder 2 graden Celcius’, wijst hij op de aanscherping van de strategie ten aanzien van klimaatverandering. Zo is de productie van Philips CO2-neutraal en worden apparaten aan het eind van de levensduur teruggenomen van ziekenhuizen.
Ook op sociaal vlak wil Philips bijdragen. ‘Zo’n 1,5 miljard mensen komen in aanraking met onze producten en diagnostiek’, wijst Van Houten. Maar aan de toegang tot goede gezondheidszorg is nog veel te verbeteren. ‘We streven naar inclusiviteit’, aldus de CEO. Van toeleveranciers wordt gevraagd goede werkomstandigheden te creëren. En zelf betracht het bedrijf de grootst mogelijke openheid over de belasting die ze betaalt in de landen waar ze actief is.
Dit laatste is ook een governance kwestie, ofwel van goed bestuur en openheid. ‘De transparantie kan altijd beter.’ Maar Van Houten verzekert dat nergens aan de hoge Europese standaarden wordt afgedaan. ‘We passen onze standaarden wereldwijd toe. We hebben een voortrekkersrol.’
Dit is ook wat hij collega-bestuurders op het World Economic Forum (WEF) vertelt. ‘De reacties van bedrijven hierop zijn zeer positief. Als we gezamenlijk de druk erop houden, dan zullen verwachtingen hoger komen te liggen en zal het verantwoord gedrag verbeteren.’
